Stage 1 ‘Hands-On’ Evening

Our recent Stage 1 ‘Hands-On’ evening was a huge success with many families in attendance. It was wonderful to observe parents exploring and experimenting with the materials, engaged in their own independent activity and working together… just as the children do each day.

One of the ways to build a strong, supportive parent and community base is the provision of Montessori parent education programs. These programs provide opportunities for prospective and current families to develop their understanding of the Montessori philosophy and method, and how this is translated in practice.

A vision of Montessori and approach to education is, “understood as a help to life; an education from birth, which feeds a peaceful revolution and unites all in a common aim, attracting them as to a single centre. Mothers, fathers, politicians: all must combine in their respect and help for this delicate work of formation, which the little child carries on in the depth of a profound psychological mystery, under the tutelage of an inner guide. This is the bright new hope for mankind” (The Absorbent Mind, p. 15).

Our annual Stage 1 ‘Hands-On’ parent education evenings provide an opportunity for families to ‘experience’ the aesthetically prepared environment as children do each day. Families are offered presentations, given explanations of the aims and purpose of the array of beautiful didactic materials and activities, and the ‘freedom’ to make choices from work that is of interest to them.  These evenings also provide some insight in to their own child’s current interests and work within the Montessori curriculum.
