Montessori from Birth and Beyond

Mother holding baby

This is a unique program offering families support and understanding of the newborn. Montessori stated that education should begin at birth.

While many new families attend classes about pregnancy and delivery, at ISMS we offer a program offering guidance from the moment of delivery and beyond.

The program runs over three Saturday mornings (one course per term) with flexibility to come and go around delivery dates if necessary.

The curriculum includes:

  • Introduction to Montessori
  • Setting up of the nursery, the prepared environment
  • The first two months of life
  • Physical care
  • Movement
  • Developing communication
  • Development of senses
  • Attachment and values of separation
  • Importance of the second parent
  • Preparation of the adult
  • Developmentally appropriate equipment and materials

The Montessori from Birth program delivery entails:

Topic 1: Introductions – meeting the course facilitator and other group members; overview of Montessori; a look at “the first” of your baby’s life.

Topic 2: The Prepared Environment – setting up the nursery in a way that will support the child’s development and integration into the home.

Topic 3: Symbiotic life – the importance of the first two months of a child’s life; psychological development; the child and the new family.

Topic 4: Physical care and its importance in the development of communication and movement.

Topic 5: Sense – a review of materials (toys) and environment to nurture the development of the seven senses: sight, smell, touch, taste, hearing, intuition and equilibrium.
