Maria Montessori

Dr. Maria Montessori was an Italian physician and educator who revolutionised early childhood education with her groundbreaking approach. Born in 1870, she was one of the first female doctors in Italy and her scientific background deeply influenced her educational philosophy. Through careful observation, she recognised that children naturally seek knowledge and learn best in an environment that supports their independence, curiosity and creativity. Dr Montessori opened the first Montessori school, the Casa dei Bambini, or Children's House, in Rome on January 6, 1907.

Dr. Montessori believed that education should nurture the whole child; academically, socially, and emotionally.

Her method encourages children to explore their world, follow their interests and develop a lifelong curiosity for learning. This child-centred approach, known as the Montessori Method, has been implemented in schools around the globe for over a century and continues to inspire our educators at ISMS. Montessori’s vision lives on in our classrooms where children are empowered to reach their full potential and we are guided by her belief that education is the key to building a better and more peaceful world.

ISMS is an independent school based in Sydney that delivers authentic Montessori education to children from birth to 12 years of age with a commitment to the Montessori philosophy.
