Montessori Principles

Planes of Development

Maria Montessori identified four key stages of development from birth to adulthood, called the Four Planes of Development. Each plane spans six years and represents a distinct phase of growth and learning.

  • First Plane (0-6 years): This stage focuses on building the foundation of the child’s personality and intellect. Children absorb information from their surroundings effortlessly, learning through exploration and sensory experiences.
  • Second Plane (6-12 years): During this period, children develop their reasoning minds and begin to understand the world around them in more complex ways. They are curious, eager to learn and driven by imagination, making this a time of intellectual and social growth.
  • Third Plane (12-18 years): Adolescents in this stage seek independence and a sense of identity. They explore their role in society, focus on developing personal values and work towards emotional and social maturity.
  • Fourth Plane (18-24 years): In this final stage, young adults continue to refine their sense of purpose, autonomy, and responsibility, preparing for adulthood and their contribution to the world.

At ISMS, we recognise the significance of the First and Second Planes of Development as essential components in Montessori education. They provide valuable insights into the distinct needs and characteristics of children at various ages.

By understanding these planes of development our educators create an appropriate learning environment that meets the specific needs of each child. This ensures that they receive the support necessary for their intellectual, emotional and social growth. This holistic approach helps children develop into well-rounded and independent individuals.

Montessori Materials

Montessori materials are thoughtfully designed, hands-on learning tools that encourage exploration, independence, and a deep understanding of concepts. From mathematics and language to practical life and sensorial development, each material engages children in self-directed discovery, allowing them to learn at their own pace. Rooted in Maria Montessori’s philosophy, these materials foster problem-solving skills, creativity, and a love for learning.

Cosmic Education

At ISMS, we embrace Dr. Maria Montessori's concept of Cosmic Education, which is especially significant during the crucial developmental years between six and twelve. This transformative period allows children to cultivate a cosmic perspective, helping them recognise the intricate interconnections that exist in our world.

Central to Cosmic Education is the understanding that law and order serve as the foundation of life and human culture. Our educators guide students in discovering these essential principles, illustrating how everything is interconnected. This foundational awareness unlocks children's understanding of the relationships between various concepts, empowering them to see the bigger picture.

History plays a vital role in our approach, as it tells the story of humanity's journey on Earth. By exploring history, we help children gain a broader perspective of their place in the universe. Through this lens, students learn to appreciate their role within the larger narrative of human existence and celebrate the achievements of those who came before them.

In our nurturing environment, children engage their imagination and reasoning skills, which are essential for understanding life. We invite you to join us on this exciting journey of discovery, where your child can thrive and develop a lifelong love of learning through Cosmic Education.

Prepared Environment and the Adult

The Prepared Environment

The Montessori Prepared Environment is carefully designed to encourage independence, creativity and a strong sense of curiosity. Each classroom is equipped with beautifully crafted, purposeful materials that invite children to explore, discover and master new skills at their own pace.

In this thoughtfully organised space, every element serves a purpose. From child-sized furniture to open shelves displaying engaging materials, everything is accessible, empowering children to take ownership of their learning. The layout fosters concentration, collaboration and the development of practical life skills, while also supporting academic growth. Teachers act as guides, observing each child's progress and providing support when needed, while allowing them the freedom to make choices and explore their interests.

The Montessori Prepared Environment is a nurturing space that encourages children to develop independence, responsibility and a deep passion for discovery. By enrolling your child at ISMS, you are giving them the opportunity to thrive in an environment designed to unlock their full potential.

The Role of the Adult

At ISMS, the role of the adult in the Montessori classroom is to act as a guide rather than a traditional teacher. Montessori educators carefully observe each child, understanding their unique needs, interests and stages of development. Instead of directing the learning, they create an environment that encourages independence, curiosity and self-motivation.

The adult introduces children to new materials and concepts, offering guidance when needed while allowing them the freedom to explore and learn at their own pace. Our Montessori educators empower children to develop problem-solving skills, confidence and a sense of responsibility by stepping back and giving students the tools for independence.  Our goal is to nurture a child’s natural desire to learn, while fostering a respectful and collaborative classroom atmosphere where every child feels supported.

ISMS is an independent school based in Sydney that delivers authentic Montessori education to children from birth to 12 years of age with a commitment to the Montessori philosophy.
