Children's House ages 3 to 6

Maria Montessori referred to the 3 to 6 year environment as Casa Di Bambini meaning Children’s House, a place where young children where they can freely engage in self-directed exploration and community participation in a prepared space. Children in this age group are in the period of self-construction, they are shaping their own identity and finding their place in the wider world, away from home. Our Children's House environments nurture a diverse, inclusive community where social connections flourish, friendships form naturally, and children learn from one another, building empathy and mutual respect.

During the first half of the three year cycle, children aged 3 to 4.5 years engage in hands-on, sensory experiences, collecting and sorting information as they explore the world around them. In the second half of this cycle from 4.5 to 6 years, children begin to build on these concrete experiences, shifting to more abstract learning and consolidating their knowledge. Throughout this journey, children are continually meeting key developmental outcomes in alignment with the Early Years Learning Framework and progressing toward the goals of the NSW Education Standards Authority syllabus.

Our Class Directors are Montessori certified and hold degrees in Early Childhood Education including the early years of Primary Education. The consistency of our deeply embedded Montessori pedagogy creates a structured environment that fosters a sense of security and well-being while supporting freedom and autonomy. Our educators take a holistic approach, dedicating time and thoughtful planning to support each child’s unique development and learning.

Our five-day schedule is designed to support your child’s social, emotional, physical and cognitive development. Consistent attendance provides each child with a sense of belonging and wellbeing and for this reason we emphasise the importance of full participation.

Children at this age learn best through hands-on experiences within their environment. Our prepared environments provide a rich variety of opportunities that nurture each child’s natural curiosity about the world. These experiences support the development of social skills, refine their senses, and encourage participation in movement. Children are immersed in enriched language opportunities, develop mathematical thinking, and explore concepts of culture and nature. Each aspect of learning is thoughtfully integrated through materials, activities, games, small group work, and interactions with nature. This approach allows children to follow their individual interests, building concentration, independence and critical thinking along the way.

The children begin their day at 8.30 am and conclude at 3:00 pm with options to book into our Outside of School Hours Care from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

Our day begins with a morning workcycle, that is, a period of uninterrupted time where children choose their activities, indoors or out. They have the freedom to immerse themselves in purposeful activities without interruption. Throughout the morning the Class Director presents new activities based on observations of each child and educators engage children in small group activities, building on language development and social skills. During this time each child may take food breaks, engage in practical life activities that develop independence, promote movement and cultivate a deep state of focus and engagement that nourishes both the mind and soul.

At lunchtime, the children in each class set up and enjoy meals brought from home, cultivating a sense of community as they share this daily routine. Afterward, they transition to outdoor play, where they engage in various activities such as obstacle courses, ball games, and sandpit exploration, encouraging movement and collaboration.

Following outdoor play, the children return to a calm and peaceful afternoon work cycle, allowing them to continue engaging in their activities of interest. Rest for the younger children may involve a nap on a floormat in a quiet corner of the room, listening to a story, engaging in yoga or breathing exercises outdoors.

Areas of the curriculum

Language

We provide a range of enriched language experiences that enhance vocabulary, expression, literacy, cultivating a love for reading and writing. Our language program starts with concrete activities, gradually progressing to more abstract concepts by the final year of Children's House, as they begin writing, reading. Our cultural extensions are embedded in the language area where children begin to communicate about the wider world, countries, botany, land and water.

Children at this stage learn second languages best through real-life, meaningful experiences rather than formal lessons. Our diverse team naturally integrates second languages into daily interactions by naming objects, exchanging greetings, and singing songs. This allows children to engage at their own pace through curiosity and interest. This immersive approach makes language learning accessible, engaging, and integrated into everyday life.

Mathematics

The mathematical mind begins to develop early as children collect, sort, and categorise to make sense of their surroundings through comparing and contrasting. Their interest in numbers grows through hands-on activities and games, starting with numbers 1 to 10 and gradually extending to the decimal system. As with all Montessori materials, the mathematical materials progress from concrete to abstract concepts, allowing children to rely less on physical objects to solve mathematical problems.

Practical Life

Practical life activities create a link between home and school, focusing on care for self, care for the environment, grace and courtesy, and the development of the will. Through engaging in daily living activities with size appropriate tools, children develop independence, movement skills and concentration. This offers them the autonomy to contribute to their environment while nurturing their sense of wellbeing.

Sensorial

The sensorial area is designed to encourage exploration through concrete activities that develop and refine the five senses. Each material serves to heighten the child’s awareness of the surrounding world, fostering confident and engaged learners who begin to appreciate its beauty.

Music

Music is an integral part of our daily Montessori curriculum, incorporating the Montessori bells, songs, and rhymes. This experience is further enriched by a specialist music teacher who leads a 30 minute session each week, engaging children in rhythm, musical exploration, and new songs. These songs are then brought back to the classroom, where children enjoy singing together in small groups, reinforcing their learning and connection through music.

Physical Education

Our specialist sports teacher engages the children in weekly sessions that focus on developing fundamental movement skills through organised gross motor games. These activities provide opportunities for children to build on their skills and physical development, as well as the foundational aspects of teamwork. The children thoroughly enjoy these experiences and eagerly look forward to them each week.

Outdoor Program

The outdoor program is thoughtfully designed by our Outdoor Educator to reflect the beauty and consistency of our indoor space. It offers a seamless integration of routine, expectations, through careful planning. The program provides children with authentic sensory experiences in nature, where they explore the textures and scents of various plants. Children engage in rich language experiences by naming the plants, identifying colours, and connecting to the land while deepening their understanding of the natural world. The program also embraces Aboriginal perspectives by acknowledging Country and introducing resources that honour Indigenous culture and history. In addition, children learn about sustainability through hands-on experiences, from germinating seeds to enjoying the food they’ve grown. This includes planning and preparing the garden, observing and caring for plants, harvesting, and cooking while reinforcing sustainable practices such as composting.

"We do not say that we want to prepare a school for the child. We wish to prepare an environment for life, where the child can develop a life. That is why we call this institution the House of Children. The idea is to give the children a house of their own, a house in which they are the masters of themselves."
